- Fundraising …Effective
with the 2007-2008 Team Fee Schedule, 40% of the total Team Fees are
considered a “Fund Raising Requirement.” This re-classification of Team
Fees has been implemented to bring CAC into compliance with recent Internal
Revenue Service rulings regarding fundraising activities and charitable
donation limits. There are several stories of swim clubs around the country
bumping into this issue with the IRS, and CAC certainly intends to avoid
this distraction by remaining consistent with all applicable rules and
regulations.The IRS classifies CAC as a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.
As a non-profit organization charitable donations are tax advantaged, but
there is a limit. Team Fee portions for which families (i.e., the swimmers)
receive personal benefit from CAC (e.g., coaching, pool time, etc.) are not
eligible for offset by fundraising or charitable donations. Team Fee
portions that cover the Club’s operational and on-going expenses can be
offset by fundraising and/or charitable donations. For CAC families, this
effectively means 40% of the Team Fees is required for fundraising, and only
this 40% is eligible for offset by fundraising/charitable donations.
Following this rule keeps CAC, which does provide “personal benefit,” in
line with the IRS and free to continue operating as a 501(c)(3)
organization.
